Child Care

Accessible childcare doesn't just help a family - it strengthens our entire community. I applaud the City Council on passing universal preschool. The program is popular and successful. There are further opportunities to shore up this program - including exploring expanding eligibility criteria.

There are many ways the Council in particular could further support young families in Cambridge. The Council should fund and support more after-school programs, and make safe streets a priority for students going to and from school.  Some of the most stressful pedestrian street crossings in our city occur where vehicular and cycle traffic mixes with our youngest commuters.

We also need to make it easier to open and safely operate day care facilities in this city. Permitting can take years, and zoning forbids their presence in most areas in the city.

We need to do what we can to make it easier for young families--especially in the realm of Child Care.
